Description

Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya or strawberry pear, is a vibrant, tropical fruit produced by climbing cacti (Hylocereus species) native to Central and South America. It is characterized by its bright pink, magenta, or yellow skin covered in leaf-like scales, which resembles a “dragon” and encases a mild, sweet flesh speckled with tiny, crunchy, edible black seeds.

Key Characteristics:

• Varieties: The most common variety has bright pink skin with white flesh, while others include deep red/pink skin with red/purple flesh (e.g., ‘American Beauty’) or yellow skin with white flesh, which is often considered the sweetest.
• Flavor & Texture: Often described as a cross between a kiwi and a pear, the texture is similar to watermelon or kiwi, while the flavor is mildly sweet and refreshing.
• Nutritional Value: Low in calories and rich in fiber, antioxidants, vitamin C, and fatty acids.
